Part 3-Building a Better PIRATE

Do you want to be safe and good, or do you want to take a chance and be great?--Jimmy Johnson

THE AWKWARD QUESTION

Do you want to be great? It can be scary, but I hope you'll say yes! Dave explains, "Our purpose is too mighty for anything less!"

WHERE DO I START?

Take the first step, even though it's the hardest! Don't let the fear of failure, believing (erroneously) that you have to have it all figured out before you can begin, perfectionism, a lack of focus, or the fear of criticism or ridicule prevent that first step! Try one thing, and no matter whether it goes well or badly, take another step! It's the only way to make progress!

FINDING A CREW

See out others, educators and non-educators, PIRATES and non-PIRATES, to learn from and with, in person and online. We're all better together, and YOU have much to add to the conversation on teaching and learning!

FINDING TREASURE!

Dave Burgess (and I!) both hope you take encouragement and ideas from this book, and he truly means it when he says he wants to hear from you! Email him, mention him in a Tweet, sign up for the mailing list, and, of course, see him at IntegratED 2015 on July 21st at East Noble High School during our joint summer of eLearning conference!

Q1--HOW HAS THIS BOOK STUDY MADE YOU A BETTER TEACHER?

AND

Q2--WILL YOU SPREAD THE MESSAGE OF THIS BOOK TO OTHERS?

  1. Despite my not being there as often as I anticipated, due to life's unfortunate events, I know after reading everyone's comments and helpful tips and insights, I have learned more than I think at this point and will be ready come the new year. I will definitely spread the word and have already spoken to my fellow colleagues across the nation about what I have read and practiced in my classroom in these few short weeks.

  2. Dave takes many things we are already doing in the classroom and puts a pirate, fun spin on things. It makes me look at things from a different perspective and be more willing to try new things and make education fun while learning. I have become more aware of some of the techniques I am using and some new ones to try. I also feel that this book study has allowed me to connect with fellow teachers that might not have happened without the study. It has been fun!
I have already talked with fellow teachers that did not participate in the book study and they are wanting to read the book. I also encourage people to attend the summer eLearning conference to meet The Pirate.

  3. A1-This book has shown me that I do a lot of the things already. I am going to tweek a few of them, but it has given me reassurance that I am doing something right. It is not fun for me or the students to just lecture all of the time. I need to probably keep track of what goes good better, so I can use it again in future years.
A2-I have already talked to other teachers at other schools about the book and that they should read it. I am also willing to work with the other teachers that read the book and see if we can collaborate on any of Dave's ideas.

    1. I think so fun lessons could come from collaborating and implementing Dave's ideas.

  4. This book study has allowed me to collaborate with other teachers in other disciplines. Anytime you can bounce ideas off of other talented teachers, you can always pick up things to help in your own classroom. I've enjoyed seeing how others approach their classrooms and techniques they use.

I think the overall point is not just to share the ideas of the book, but to model them. If someone is bringing passion and commitment to their profession, and always looking for techniques to improve, then that attitude will spread amongst other staff as well. This will help teachers remember they are not in it alone and have others who are working to achieve the same goals.

  5. A1 This book gave me energy and new inspiration. It would be good for me to review this book again right before school starts. I agree with Dave B philosophy and view toward teaching and would like to get others on board in our building. Just think what this building could be if 1/3 of the teachers took the ideas and implemented.

A2 I have already shared some ideas with others and plan to loan my book out now that I am done. Wonder how many people would read this if we offered to loan are book with no strings attached?

    1. Agree, reviewing the book is a must! It would be wonderful if at least our little group could make an impact and get the ball rolling😊

  6. Q1 It was good to see that I/we have good ideas because they are used by Dave, but his lists are huge and I have many more ideas to try and see what fits best. I told Chantell that I tried a music idea that didn't go well, but not a total bust to I will try again. I enjoyed seeing all the other ideas right here,so much energy and excitement.

Q2 I will share the book especially the lists of ideas .

    1. I agree, Donna...lots of great ideas! Sometimes a bust is just the first version of a success-in-the-making!

  7. I enjoyed reading TLAP with my colleagues and getting to know more about them and what they do. As a new teacher at AHS, I now feel like I am a part of a crew. There are so many interesting and exciting things going on here and I am happy to be a part of it. I am constantly seeking new treasures for my classroom. There are so many out there, I just need to continue my search to find new ways to reach all my students!

I also have found that some new things I try, may fail the first time, or may have varied success depending on the classes, but it may simply be that something needs to be adjusted in the approach or implementation. After some reflection, I've found some days, the winds are just better for sailing and sometimes the tides affect my intended course!

I think TLAP has made me realize that it is ok, and maybe even, good to bring more of myself, my passions and my experiences into the classroom. In the past, I have tried to separate them. While I have never thought of myself as a pirate, I do love the sea and exploring new lands! What I consider a treasure may be because of my perspective. It's great to have found some new mates!

    1. It is so very difficult to feel a part of something when I am only in one school part of the day, but the time I was with my "pirate" group, I never felt more welcomed! Thank you😉I hope to become more a part of AMS next year.
