Introduction: A Pirate's Life for Me!

Yes, I'm a fanatic! I wear a #TLAP bracelet!
"Life's pretty good, and why wouldn't it be?
 I'm a pirate after all."
- Johnny Depp

Why a pirate?
"Pirates are daring, adventurous, and willing to set forth into uncharted territories with no guarantee of success.  They reject the status quo and refuse to conform to any society that stifles their creativity and independence. ...Pirates don't much care about public perception; they proudly fly their flags in defiance." (Burgess p.xii)

In a comment to this post, tell at least one reason you wanted to be part of this book study.  What do you hope to gain? Also, which section of the PIRATE acronym do you feel you do best? Explain.  Which part will you improve upon the most on this journey? Explain.

I wanted to facilitate this book club because I am passionate about this book! I read TLAP in August, and I've been sailing through my best year yet! I even wrote my first blog post about TLAP (First Post)!  I feel my strongest section is R-rapport, because I crave connecting with my students. My most difficult adjustment my first year teaching at AHS wasn't giving up teaching French, it was transitioning from a 3-4 year relationship I built with students in French class to a 1 semester relationship here on the block schedule. I am learning the most about A-ask&analyze. I've never thought of myself as a "creative" person, and I love working on analyzing my lessons and increasing the creativity of both myself and my students!

Good luck on this journey! I know we will learn so much together!

  1. I joined this discussion because I feel that even after 14 years of teaching that there is still room for improvement. I feel that I am the best at Immersion because I feel that I am able to bring real-life learning into my Science classroom. I want to work on Ask and Analyze to help my students tie together what they are learning in one section or chapter to what they are learning in another section or chapter. It is very hard to get them to understand the "big picture" and how the material constantly builds on itself.

    1. I love your growth mindset here, Chris! So important to recognize we ALL always have more to learn and ways to improve!

  2. Hello and am so glad to be a part of this group! I joined not only to feel more a part of AHS and get to know more teachers, but to grow more in my teaching and my love for learning. My strongest is the rapport I have with my students. I believe that building relationships of trust is key right from the beginning. I want my students to feel comfortable. As for growing and hoping to gain more knowledge, I think the areas of transformation and sometimes, even immersion. I set high expectations for all students and I am finding maybe that not all are attainable and it only brings me down when it does not work the way I had hoped. Therefore, I tend to not fully immerse myself all the time.

    2. We are so happy to have you as part of our book study, Lara! It can be a let down when things don't go as planned, but I think TLAP will make you an even more reflective teacher!

  3. I am very excited about this book and the new suggestions and ideas it has to share. Growing professionally and personally is important to me. The part of the Acronym that is my strength is Passion and Rapport. I want students to know that they are valued and important to this society and want them to leave my room knowing that. The asking and analyzing part is the section that I look froward to most. Asking questions is a strategy that is beneficial and I want to get better at.

    2. Many of us have chosen Ask&Analyze as a focus for our study; I thhink we'll all grow here together!

    3. I think that your kids would be the ones who need to have the Rapport most and you are able to do that since you are with them for 4 years.

  4. I am excited about new learning. Don't see myself as creative but like to copy good ideas. Willing to try just seem to be slow at connecting the purpose of some of the technology. Thanks Opper for your help tonight

    1. You'll see that TLAP is not all about technology, but about using tech AND many other means to engage students!

  5. I am excited about this book. I feel as if many of my students will benefit from it. It is difficult to engage a lot of our students and even more difficult to get them to value their education. I'm looking forward to bettering myself as a teacher and learning how to better my students.

    1. You are a great asset to theses students. Your youth and your ability to relate to others alone is beneficial. Your enthusiasm on top of that with your desire to continue to grow is bonus for your students and AHS. Thank you!

    2. I've read it through twice, and I'm still excited about TLAP! Engaging students should be our top priority, for not engaging them means they are passive in their educations.

  6. I joined the book discussion since I follow Dave Burgess on twitter and would like to know more about teaching. I enjoy hearing new ideas to help improve my teaching or sparking the students interests. I am very Passionate about teaching and feel we teach everywhere and not only in the classroom. I want to learn more about the Ask and Analyze so I can ask a question to spark an interest in students. Always room to improve

    1. If you're following Dave on Twitter, you're probably getting a lot of TLAP already! Now you'll know the whole story, and hopefully get even more ideas!

  7. I look forward to re-energizing my enthusiasm for teaching. I too enjoy developing a good rapport with students, but feel my creativity is lacking with all the new technology that I do not know how to use effectively.

    1. I hope TLAP can help you get your passion back! It's important to remember that technology is only one means of creativity; students still need pencils, paper, crayons, and legos too!

  8. I joined to interact with peers in different disciplines. I am the strongest in I and A as my teaching style and class structure are really designed around these principles. I would like to improve in the T category as I see too many of our students with straight F's who have little or no interest in engaging in the school environment.

    1. Yes, engagement is the biggest battle. Hopefully, you'll get many ideas to help make it happen!!

    2. I agree with Troy, I have a number of kids who have simply given up and no amount of enthusiasm and questions seems to motivate them to get involved in their studies. They've already shut down and feel there is no purpose to what we are doing. While these students rarely act out, I feel that I am letting them down somehow by not making the class something they want to participate in.

  9. Well, I guess when I figure out what I am supposed to post where, I won't feel I'm in danger of being asked to walk the plank! I had downloaded a link to TLAP through Matt Miller, but had not gotten around to reading it. I thought this would be a good opportunity to learn and improve my teaching...two things I am passionate about!

  11. I want to be in this book study to gain new teaching techniques that will reinvigorate my day to day lessons. I think that I am an exceptionally good teacher at ask and analyze, but I'm really looking forward to seeing how I can make my class more immersive.

  12. Take two: Is there life beyond education?! Education is life, life is education. I have difficulty separating the two. I am always learning and trying to find ways to incorporate it into my classroom. I did not intend to be a Spanish teacher, but somehow, I'm where I belong. My family and friends are most important in my life outside of school, yet they tie in. I'm a first-generation American and lived in Spain as a child, after moving permanently to the states, my parents made sure we spent every other summer there, so we wouldn't lose our language, heritage and family connections. I still keep in touch on Whats App (we have several group chats going) and Facebook. While I focus on all skills, what I love teaching most is culture. I also like to make connections to art, music, history, geography, gastronomy, sociology, business, other languages etc. I love to travel (and don't do it as often as I'd like), but I tend to go where I have family and can speak Spanish. I think I need to incorporate that into my lessons more and work on developing a rapport with my students. They think it is getting me off track when I talk about my life and experiences, but I think it is making a connection and making language study real and useful. When the students made their digital family albums ( those who used their real family) and presented them to me, I felt like we were developing a rapport and I was learning more about them.
